Cidade de Pedras
Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães - Mato Grosso, Brazil
Description of the Route
The Cidade de Pedras is located within Chapada das Guimaraes National Park, approximately 28 km (18 miles) from the city of Chapada and in the upper part of the Claro River Valley. After the last part of the drive on unmaintained dirt roads, we will hike 300 meters to the lookout point at the edge of the cliffs. The route is named “the stone city” because of the gigantesque sandstone walls. The sublime rock formations are constantly sculpted and transformed by weathering. It is not uncommon to sight Green-shouldered Macaws flying overhead and hear the shrill cry of the Red-legged Seriema, or see Tapir and Mountain Lion tracks along the trail. Down below we will observe the tapestry of the Brazilian Savanna divided by the headwaters of the Paciencia and Claro rivers.
What to Bring?
Because access to the Cidade de Pedras is by a series of trails through the scrublands, much of which has little or no shade we make the following recommendations:
- Footwear that is adequate for wilderness trails.
- A Sun hat & Sunscreen.
- Drinking Water.
- Insect Repellent.
- A Camera, preferably with both Macro and Telephoto Lenses.
- Rain gear between the months of October and April.
This trip is offered daily. Advanced reservations are required as you must be registered with the park to enter. For this we need your full name(s) and passport number & issuing authority for foreigners, or full name & CPF number for Brazilians. This tour is accompanied by a guide authorized by the park.
