Caverna Aroe Jari & Lagoa Azul
Chapada dos Guimaraes, Mato Grosso, Brazil

Description of theTour Route

The Aroe Jari Cavern is the largest sandstone cavern in Brazil, with almost 1500 meters (500 feet) in length.  It’s name comes from the Bororó language and means “the dwelling-place of the souls.  It is located 46 km from the city of Chapada dos Guimaraes on the Fazenda Agua Fria (Cold Water Ranch).

The tour starts at the reception area of the farmhouse at the ranch. Here we put on the safety equipment and prepare for the hike. We follow the trail through the scrublands to the Ponte de Pedra (Stone Bridge) where there is an excellent lookout over the region.   Then we pass a gallery forest until we reach the first chamber of the cave.

In the first hall we will find a small waterfall originating in the ceiling of the chamber.  Slowly our eyes adjust to the murky light of the cavern and then we are able to explore the details of the hall with our lanterns.  We leave the first chamber in the direction of Boca do Buritizal (Entrance to the Mauritia Palm Forest), whe we encounter the Pedra das Três Pontes (Three Pointed Rock).  Then we enter the Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon Cave).  At the edge of the pool we step down inside and explore the hidden beauties of the surroundings.  Just ahead we encounter the Caverna Kyogo Brado  (Kyogo Brando Cavern) which is approximately 20 meters (65 feet) in height and 500 (1640 feet) meters in length with astounding rock formations.

We return to the starting point where we have lunch and continue by car to the Cachoeira do Relógio (Clock Waterfall) where we have a chance to take a swim.  On the return to Chapada we visit the Mirante do Centro Geodésico (Scenic Overlook at the Geodesic Center of South America).
