The Forest Fragment
The hotel helps to preserve a 50 hectare (123 acre) area of primary forest, which connects to additional areas of preserved rainforests totaling 235 hectares (580 acres). It is the largest remaining forest fragment within the city limits of Alta Floresta, and thus one of the most isolated forest fragments in the region. While research hasn’t been conducted since 2006, is still one of the most heavily ornithological-inventoried forest patches in the region and this has allowed researchers to document some of the avian extinctions that have occurred since its isolation. The synergistic impacts of forest isolation, disturbance (e.g. fires, hunting), edge-effects (e.g. meso-predator release) have led to the disappearance of several bird species such as Bare-eyed Antbird (Rhegmatorhina gymnops) and Rufous-capped Antthrush (Formicarius colma) along with all foliage-gleaners. However, the forest still retains a rich and varied bird community; such as the Harpy Eagle nest found in 2012, or the singing Long-tailed Potoo found in 2006. Some species may not be permanent residents within the patch (e.g. large forest eagles) and others are only known from a handful of records but may retain populations in the under-watched back part of the patch. Although even to the untrained ear the dawn chorus here pales into insignificance compared with the Cristalino, the FAH fragment still warrants a few days exploration especially as some birds are more reliable here than on the other side of the river, e.g. Crimson-bellied Parakeet, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper and Chestnut-tailed Antbird.
